   Une jeune femme, qui a épousé un riche banquier pour sauver sa famille de la misère, prend un amant. Mais son mari est ruiné, et les deux époux feront face ensemble à l'adversité.

   Résumé
   Jakub, un jeune étudiant juif dans la Pologne d'avant-guerre, se retrouve en prison après avoir été victime d'un véritable pogrom à l'université. Pendant l'Occupation, il atterrit dans le ghetto. Il s'évade et trouve refuge chez une femme puis chez un ami qui l'abrite dans sa cave. Jakub meurt finalement sous les décombres d'un édifice plein d'Allemands qu'il détruit à coups de grenades.
   Commentaire
   La première verve lyrique et baroque de Wajda s'épuise un peu avant ses deux ou trois «renaissances» successives et ce film n'a pas l'authenticité ni l'invention de ses quatre premiers dont il prolonge pourtant l'esthétique romantique.
